NEW CASTLE - A benefit rummage sale was underway Friday outside Senior Living at Forest Ridge. Each year residents, their family members and people from the community donate items to the sale, the proceeds of which benefit Shepherd’s Door, a local food pantry.
“We try to have the sale pretty early in the summer to get people outside. After a long winter, it’s nice to be outdoors,” said Forest Ridge Executive Director Brad Shearer.
Some of the residents were out enjoying the morning sun while they helped staff set up for the sale. There was plenty of laughter, smiles and memories going around as items were being brought out to sell.
The senior living facility’s next event to help Shepherd’s Door will take place at 10 a.m. June 14. The community is invited to attend and bring canned or boxed foods to donate to the food pantry. Reservations are required by June 13. The event will be a social society brunch with guest speakers.
“Some of the residents will be talking about topics that interest them,” Shearer said. “We’re going to have sausage and pancakes along with a few other things. It really should be a fun morning for everyone.”
Elizabeth Edstene, executive director of the Henry County Historical Society, will also be speaking at the event, highlighting the history of Henry County and local landmarks.
Forest Ridge sponsors one charity a year, but halfway through the summer they begin raising money for another organization.Through July, Forest Ridge will host events to benefit Shepherd’s Door. After those events end, they will begin raising money for Hope for the Holidays.
